George M. Gottheimer Memorial Award

Created in 2007, the George M. Gottheimer Memorial Award is to be presented annually to a CPCU Society member who has made an outstanding contribution to the field of insurance education, risk management or insurance consulting. A three member selection committee receives and reviews nominations for the award. This year's selection committee is composed of past CLEW Committee Chairmen Jim Robertson and Dan Free and past CPCU Society President Lawton Swan.

George M. Gottheimer, Jr., PhD, CPCU, CLU, ARe

In March, 2007, the insurance industry lost one of its giants when George M. Gottheimer, Jr., PhD, CPCU, CLU, ARe, passed away. George was a loyal and committed supporter of the Consulting, Litigation and Expert Witness Group of the CPCU Society. He has been a member of CLEW’s Governing committee from the time we were called “interest sections.” In fact, George was one of the original committee members that I recruited during the formation stages of the CLEW Section in 1993. We had previously worked together as members of the Board of Directors and as Regional Vice Presidents. Prior to serving on the Board, George had already been involved in service to the Society in many capacities since the 1970’s, including serving as the chairman of the 1985 Annual Meeting Seminars committee. He was also a trustee of the CPCU-Harry J. Loman Foundation.

Professionally, George was an insurance and reinsurance management consultant. He founded his own firm, Kernan Associates, in 1986. Prior to that time ha had served for many years as an insurance and reinsurance executive. His last position was as Senior Executive VP and COO of the Drake Insurance Company of New York.

George embodied the concept of the lifelong learner, and he loved to teach. He was a noted authority on reinsurance and solvency issues, and testified as an expert witness in a number of cases for which his testimony was favorably cited in appellate decisions. He was an adjunct professor for more than 30 years at The College of Insurance and then St. John’s University, teaching classes on insurance and reinsurance management. He also authored a number of textbooks on reinsurance.

Through all of these accomplishments, George was simply a good friend to many of us, a loyal supporter of the CPCU Society and the CLEW Interest Group, and a humble individual who had a wonderful sense of humor.

2009 - Lipshultz Receives Coveted CPCU Society George M. Gottheimer Memorial Award

The Consulting, Litigation & Expert Witness (CLEW) Interest Group Committee bestowed its third annual George M. Gottheimer Memorial Award on Stanley L. Lipshultz, CPCU, J.D. Lipshultz is a consultant with Interisk Limited in North Bethesda, Md. The presentation was made on Aug. 30 in Denver, immediately preceding the CLEW Interest Group's mock trial, "Rocky Mountain Heist ... Or Certificates of Insurance, Additional Insureds and Other Myths," held during the Society's 2009 Annual Meeting and Seminars. The award is presented to a CPCU Society member who has made an outstanding contribution to the field of insurance education, risk management or insurance consulting.

The Society cited Lipshultz's premier educational achievements as a member of its District of Columbia Chapter and his distinguished and voluminous contributions - in many capacities - at the Society level. Those contributions include having been a course instructor for CPCU and the Independent Insurance Agents of Maryland and D.C. for almost 30 years; his volunteer service as a CLEW Interest Group Committee member, including serving as newsletter editor and chair; his service as a CPCU Society Governor and Executive Committee member and as chair of the Diversity Committee; his impact in writing the scenarios for, and serving in, various roles in the 13 mock trials presented by CLEW Interest Group at the CPCU Society's Annual Meeting and Seminars since 1995.

"We had several worthy nominees this year, but Stan's contributions to the Society and CLEW stood apart from the others," said James A. Robertson, CPCU, ARM, a member of the Gottheimer Award Selection Committee. "We are very privileged to be the beneficiary of his talents."

The Award is named in memory of George M. Gottheimer Jr., CPCU, Ph.D., CLU, ARe, a longtime supporter of CLEW and a person of towering stature in the insurance industry. Gottheimer, who was an insurance and reinsurance management consultant, embodied the concept of a lifelong learner and was one who loved to teach. He passed away in 2007.

The two previous recipients of the Gottheimer Award are Donald S. Malecki, CPCU, a distinguished insurance scholar and teacher for more than 40 years, who was honored in 2007; and Norman A. Baglini, CPCU, Ph.D., CLU, ARe, professor of risk management, insurance and business ethics at Temple University in Philadelphia, who received the award
in 2008.

Jim Robertson offered the following comments about the 2007 award recipient prior to the CLEW Interest Group Mock Trial presentation at the CPCU Annual Meeting and Seminars in Honolulu, Hawaii on September 9th:

At this time we are pleased to announce that the first recipient of the CLEW Section’s George M. Gottheimer Memorial Award is Donald S. Malecki, CPCU.

Any insurance professional who has not heard of Don Malecki must not read trade journals, attend seminars or have read a CPCU course book. Don has spent more than 47 years in the insurance industry, and for the last 40 of these years, property-casualty insurance professionals have been relying on his research and published commentaries for their learning needs and industry training. When I started working as a casualty underwriter in 1970, my manager told me to do two things if I wanted to develop a comprehensive knowledge of the business: read all of the volumes of the FC&S Bulletins, of which Don was then the associate editor; and take CPCU classes. Don worked for the National Underwriter Company, producing property and casualty publications that probably all of us in this room have used, from 1966 to 1984. He started doing part-time consulting work in 1978, and became a full-time consultant in 1984. His firm is now known as Malecki, Deimling, Nielander & Associates, LLC.

Like George, Don was a teacher for many years, in the Cincinnati, Ohio area, providing instruction for courses offered through the local CPCU Chapter as well as Miami University of Ohio and the College of Business Administration of the University of Cincinnati.

Don’s publications and seminars are legion. Not counting publications he wrote or authored while employed at the National Underwriter Company, he has been publishing an average of about one book per year since the early 1980’s. He has written more items for publication about property and casualty insurance subjects than most of us will be able to read in our lifetimes.

Since receiving his CPCU designation in 1970, he has been serving The Society in a variety of local and national positions, including his current position on the CLEW Interest Committee. There probably is no other individual who has presented more programs for CPCU Society members, whether you call them seminars, symposia or workshops. His curriculum vitae lists over 120 presented in just the last 10 years. That’s an average of about 10 programs per year, and most of them require Don to travel from one end of the United States to the other, and occasionally he gives programs in foreign lands, as well. His seminars at the Society’s Annual Meeting and Seminars are always among the most well-attended CE events of the week.
